Acrylic ear tapers with a red rebel star detail.

Acrylic jewellery is an extremely lightweight, cheap and versatile material for body jewellery. It is great for temporary wear in healed piercings and comes in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes. It can even glow in the dark and glow under ultra violet light. It is mostly used for plugs, tapers and decorative balls on tongue bars and belly bars.

Although acrylic body jewellery is cheap, it is a durable and hygienic material to wear, as long as your piercing isn’t new and the jewellery is cleaned beforehand. Acrylic can not be heat sterilised by an autoclave as it is a polymer (plastic) and would melt and discolour.

The reason it should not be used in fresh or unhealed piercings is that it can harbour bacteria in tiny pores and fissures on its smooth surface, leading to a higher risk of infection. This also applies to newly stretched ear lobes, acrylic is not a suitable material to stretch your ears.

The best thing about acrylic body jewellery is that it is cheap, and as this material should only be worn for short periods of time, renewing it on a regular basis won’t break the bank!
Remember, don’t wear your acrylic jewellery for too long and keep it clean!
If you are looking for a material that can be worn for extended periods of time, we advise you to use an organic material, or a high quality metal such as Titanium.
