Smooth Segment Rings – Get to Know Your Jewellery

Smooth segment rings were inspired by ball closure rings (BCRs) but while a BCR has a captive ball, the smooth segment ring features a curved segment that “pops” out to open and close the ring. When the segment is in, the smooth segment ring looks like a smooth, solid ring. This gives you a very sleek look and segment rings look wonderful in almost any piercing.

The fact that smooth segment rings are completely smooth means that they can be rotated 360 degrees through the piercing. This means that they are easy to clean, very comfortable to wear and much less likely to snag on clothing or hair. Smooth segment rings are ideal for facial piercings and ear piercings – areas where you might not want a bulky BCR. They are able to lie flat against the skin, perfect for septum piercings, lip piercings and tragus piercings. In many of these locations the ball on a BCR would press into the skin, but a smooth segment ring remains comfortable.

To open a smooth segment ring you need to pop out the segment, which can be quite difficult if you are just using your hands. Segment rings are designed to hold onto the segment tightly, which prevents them opening accidentally. So the best way to have your segment rings placed is to take them to your professional piercer and ask them to put the ring for you.

Body Piercing History – Drops of Knowledge

Eager to know a bit of body piercing history?

The Aztecs, Mayans and various American Indians pierced their tongues as part of their religious rituals. They believed it brought them closer to their Gods as a type of ritual blood-letting. These were warrior tribes, thus practised septum piercing to appear fiercer to their enemies. Similarly, some tribes in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands would pierce their tongue. Common materials used were bone, tusks and feathers.

In the picture, this old Mayan painting found in the Chiapas State in Mexico shows a lady performing a tongue piercing ritual.

How To Make a Saline Solution – Advice

Why are we told to use sea salt to clean a fresh and flared up piercing?

Well, sea salt is a natural antibacterial and when mixed with water the solution becomes just like your body’s natural solution. Yes, the water in our bodies has natural salt, or saline if you will.

This is why you need to avoid harsh chemicals and mouth wash which contains alcohol, yes it will kill the bad germs but in doing so you will kiss goodbye to all the good bacteria that promotes the healing process.

So, how exactly do you make a sea salt soak?

Saline Solution
Saline Solution

The idea is to try to have the same concentration as your body’s natural salt.

1. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of pure sea salt with one cup of water. The water should be filtered, bottled or  boiled and left to cool so that bacteria is killed.

2. Apply to the piercing with either a small cup, holding it upside down over the piercing  to let it ‘  ’soak’ the area, or a clean tissue/kitchen towel.

3. Pat the area dry with a clean, sterile napkin or cloth after soaking for a good few minutes.

This process helps your body dispel all those nasty germs and dead cells without disrupting good germs. It also gives the area a healthy fluid to create new cells.

Without taking proper care of your new piercing it could cause it to be rejected by your body or even worse, infected. Of course almost everyone will experience swelling and redness after a fresh piercing, but if left without proper care it can become infected. This can be awfully nasty, especially with facial piercings. (I am speaking from experience, and boy have I learned my lesson!)

When your piercing is healing you should not:

– Play with your jewellery. It is a complete myth that your piercing will become stuck if you do not twirl it around and keep it moving. Cleaning the piercing twice a day is more than enough upkeep for the healing process.

Consume alcohol. It is a very harsh substance that takes away good bacteria from your body, thus making the healing process more difficult.

Touch the piercing without washing hands. This one is obvious, just don’t do it. Clean your hands regularly and practise good hygiene!

– Smoke cigarettes. Tobacco smoke is full of chemicals and it can lead to an infection. Some people with facial piercings say that smoking can be done if you wash your mouth thoroughly after every cig, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Also, remember not to over clean your piercing, it can cause irritation. Twice a day is plenty if you do not mess with it during the day and irritate the area.

Titanium – Piercing Materials Guide

Titanium is a very lightweight and strong metal that is great for using in initial piercings, as it less likely to react with body fluids and cause an infection or irritation, is very resistant to corrosion and is the most bio-compatible metal. It contains less than 0.05% nickel, becoming one of the preferred materials used in body jewellery manufacturing and piercing across Europe. It has become a popular alternative to surgical steel, 9ct gold and other materials that contain higher levels of nickel.

It can be sterilised in an autoclave and anodised to create an oxide layer of colour on the jewellery. However, constant wear in oral piercings may cause the colour to fade over time, due to the acidity in the mouth and in certain foods and drinks.

Titanium body jewellery here at Paradox is all made using 6AL-4V commercially pure Titanium, which is certified for medical implant use and conforms to the European Directive 94/27/EU for initial piercings.
